Having won the J-League title three times and finished second twice, they are one of the most successful J-League clubs. The team are based in Yokohama and were founded as the company team of Nissan Motors. The club was formed by the merger of Yokohama Marinos and Yokohama Flügels in 1999. The current name is intended to reflect both Marinos and Flügels. The team name Marinos means "sailors" in Spanish. Yokohama F. It was decided however that, from 2007, the team will simply been known as "Kyoto Sanga". They are the oldest club competing in the J. League.

Cho plans short stint

New South Korea coach Choi Kang-hee wants to lead the national team through qualification for the 2014 World Cup and then step down to return to club management.
Choi was appointed on Wednesday and succeeds Cho Kwang-rae who was dismissed on December 8 following poor results.

After seven seasons with Jeonbuk Motors and two K-league titles and the 2006 AFC Champions League triumph, Choi was reluctant to leave the current champions to take the national team coaching job and told a press conference in Seoul on Thursday that he hopes to Jeonju.
"I have requested that I be replaced before the World Cup if we get that far,'' he said. "The saddest part is to leave Jeonbuk and that is why I refused the job at first. Even until a week ago, I didn't even think at all that I would be leaving Jeonbuk.

"I thought about it a lot and it is not a case of goodbye but so long. The contract with the national team will end in June 2013. Personally, I want to return to Jeonbuk.''
November's loss in Lebanon not only cost Cho Kwang-rae his job but left the 2002 World Cup semi-finalists needing a point against Kuwait on February 29 to be sure of a place in the final phase of qualification.
"The game against Kuwait is the most important thing,'' Choi said. "I think that I should select more K-league players than overseas player as those overseas are not playing so much for their clubs and can lose some of their sharpness.''- http://soccernet.espn.go.com

12BET Korea league News 12/25

New South Korea coach less than thrilled about new job

SEOUL: There were no mentions of dreams fulfilled or patriotic honour when Choi Kang-hee reluctantly accepted the job as South Korea's new national team coach.

Rarely has a man entrusted with such a position looked less excited to be given the chance to lead his country to the World Cup. In his first press conference in his new role on Thursday, Choi looked like he had been dragged into the hot seat.

He was content coaching Jeonbuk Motors in the mid-sized provincial city of Jeonju in Korea's rural southwest, but now the taciturn tactician is charged with the task of leading an expectant nation to Brazil in 2014 and an eighth successive appearance on the global stage.

Choi, 52, was the longest serving club coach in the domestic K-league, and since 2005 had slowly turned Jeonbuk into the best team in the country and one of the best in Asia. The former international player led the Motors to the 2006 Asian Champions League title and the final of the 2011 version, when the team dominated the match against Al Sadd of Qatar only to lose after a penalty shootout.

Four days after Choi lifted the K-League trophy for the second time with the club on December 4, the Korea Football Association fired Cho Kwang-rae in the wake of a shocking 2-1 defeat away to Lebanon.

Even before Cho's dismissal, the KFA contacted Choi to offer him the job. He refused, the first of a number of times he turned down advances from the association. - http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/s

Korean Football News 12BET Update 12/23

South Korea announce Choi Kang-Hee as new manager

The announcement comes just two weeks after the federation sacked former manager Cho Kwang-Rae following the country's shock loss to Lebanon in World Cup qualifying

The Korean Football Association (KFA) ended days of speculation in their Wednesday announcement of Jeonbuk Motors manager Choi Kang-Hee's appointment as new South Korea coach.

Kang-Hee replaces Cho Kwang-Rae, who was fired in early December after South Korea's stunning 2-1 loss to Lebanon in the third round of World Cup qualifying for Asia. The result meant that South Korea will have to beat Kuwait in their final match of the round in order to advance to the fourth and final group stage.

"We looked at several options," said KFA technical committee head Hwangbo Kwan.

"But since the Kuwait match is only three months away we had to pick Choi Kang-Hee, who can adapt to the current team right away."

Kang-Hee led Jeonbuk to the club's second K-League championship, in addition an appearance in the Asian Champions League finals in which they lost on penalties to Qatari side Al Sadd.

"He was always the first option for our technical commitee," elaborated Kwan in his statement to reporters.

"He was also optimistic about the opportunity, and Jeonbuk has allowed him to join the NT."

Kang-Hee is a veteran of Korean football, both as a manager and as a player. Between 1988 and 1992 he earned 40 caps for their national team and has managed Jeonbuk since 2005, leading the club to two K-League titles and an ACL title in 2006.

South Korea sit first in Asia's Group B with ten points, but a loss to Kuwait and a Lebanon draw or win over UAE on February 29 would knock the Taeguk Warriors out of contention for a World Cup 2014 appearance. - http://www.goal.com

Nagoya Grampus vs Kashiwa Reysol 12BET 12/21 6PM GMT+8

Nagoya Grampus (formerly Nagoya Grampus Eight) are a Japanese association football club that play in the J. League. Based in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture and originally founded as the company team of the Toyota Motor Corp. in 1939, the club shares its home games between Mizuho Athletic Stadium (capacity 27,000 and the J.League's oldest-serving stadium) and the much larger Toyota Stadium (capacity 45,000).

Grampus are one of only five teams to have competed in Japan's top flight of football every year since its inception in 1993. The team previously had its most successful season in 1995 when it was managed by current Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, winning the prestigious Emperor's Cup and finishing runners-up in the J.League, and which featured, among others, Dragan Stojković and Gary Lineker on the team, until it was eclipsed in 2010 on November 20, 2010, when the club won their first ever J. League trophy, under the management of Wenger protégé and former Grampus player Dragan Stojković.

Kashiwa Reysol is a J. League Division 1 team. Its home town is Kashiwa, Chiba, about an hour northeast of Tokyo. In 2009 they were relegated again, but in 2010 they won the J2 title and in 2011, against all predictions, won the J1 title, becoming the first Japanese team to win the second and first tier titles back-to-back. By winning the title in 2011 they also qualified for the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup.

Club World Cup in Japan becomes a family reunion for Barcelona's Gerard Pique

The defender will get a rare chance to see his extended family gathered together during Sunday's tournament final at Nissan Stadium in Yokohama

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique may have arrived in Japan last Sunday, but his extended family's roots in Japan stretch considerably further back in time.

Br. Jordi Guitart, Pique's great-uncle, came to Japan's fourth-largest city of Nagoya 40 years ago as a missionary for the order of Saint Antoni Maria Claret. Guitart's sister, Montserrat, is Pique's grandmother as well as the wife of Barcelona representative Amador Bernabeu.

With Pique's parents as well as girlfriend and international pop star Shakira coming to Japan in the hopes of seeing Barcelona capture their second consecutive Club World Cup title, the tournament has become a family affair for the 24-year-old.

"It's wonderful that my family can gather under one roof in Japan," Pique told Spain's Mundo Deportivo.

While the Spaniard watched his team's 4-0 trouncing of Asian champions Al Sadd from the bench, he will hope to secure a place in the starting line-up when Barcelona plays South American kings Santos in the tournament final on Sunday at 11.30 CET. - http://www.goal.com/

Japan's J-League officially admits Matsumoto Yamaga and Machida Zelvia into 2012 season

The expansion brings the country's second division to 22 teams, completing one element of the J-League's 100 Year Plan for developing football within the country

Japan Football League (JFL) sides Machida Zelvia and Matsumoto Yamaga will become the 39th and 40th teams to join the J-League, fulfilling a long-held goal of expanding the country's second division to 22 teams.

The decision was announced after the league's board of directors met at the JFA House in central Tokyo on Monday, December 12. The announcement itself was considered a formality after both clubs guaranteed a top-four finish in the JFL which, in addition to earning J-League Associate Membership status, is one of the key criteria required to join the league.

Following the expansion, J2 will adapt a 42-round home-and-away schedule in 2012. The J-League and JFL are also working to develop a system of promotion and relegation between the two leagues, with the creation of a third division ('J3') also a possibility.

Western Tokyo's Machida Zelvia, founded as FC Machida in 1989, earned promotion to the JFL in 2008. Despite placing third last year under Naoki Soma (who now manages J-League Division 1 side Kawasaki Frontale), the J-League declined to admit Zelvia after the team's home stadium, Machida Municipal Athletic Stadium, didn't meet standards. The stadium has since installed enough seats to meet the J2 requirement of 10,000 in addition to adding lighting equipment for night matches.

The league has requested that Zelvia turn a profit in 2012 as a condition for their promotion after the club has failed to end any of their seasons in the black. Current manager Ranko Popovic, who lead the team to another third-place finish this year, has been tied to a move to first division side FC Tokyo.

Matsumoto Yamaga are the first team from Nagano Prefecture to join the league after spending just two years in the JFL. In addition to having made waves in the nation-wide Emperor's Cup tournament by regularly upsetting J-League teams such as Shonan Bellmare and Urawa Reds, Yamaga gained attention this year after signing former Yokohama F. Marinos and Japanese national team star Naoki Matsuda. Matsuda died suddenly of heart failure in August during a practice session.

The team shattered JFL attendance records this season with just under 7,500 per match, representing a 50% spike and placing 24th among Japanese clubs. After placing seventh in their first JFL season last year, Yamaga finished fourth this season despite a mid-season slump and the loss of one fixture following the March 11 natural disasters. They will face Marinos this weekend in the fourth round of this year's Emperor's Cup after defeating J-League sides Yokohama FC and Albirex Niigata. - http://www.goal.com

Kashiwa Reysol's Brazilian boss Nelsinho Baptista eyes Santos surprise

The former Santos player and coach cannot wait for their Club World Cup semi-final against the Brazilians who he believes the Japanese side can beat

Kashiwa Reysol coach Nelsinho Baptista says his side can upset his former club Santos in the Club World Cup semi-final after knocking out Monterrey on penalties in Sunday's quarter-final.

Nelsinho, who coached Santos in 2005 and played with the Brazilian club from 1978 to 1982, said his team would study up on their upcoming opponents as they attempt to produce a surprise result in Wednesday's clash.

"Those two teams [Santos and Barcelona] are the two expected to play the final, but one never knows until the game is played," Nelsinho told reporters on Sunday.

"Santos is a top team with great talent among the individual players, but the team and I will discuss how to play this game to win it. I will get as much information as possible, and try to help out my players."

He added: "My players were very happy in the locker room today. All this is very new for us, a new environment. For my young players in particular it is the first time they play international games, and now we'll face Santos!"

Kashiwa's 4-3 penalty shootout win over Monterrey, which followed a 120-minute 1-1 deadlock, occured just days after last week's comfortable 2-0 victory over Oceania champions Auckland City.

Nelsinho continued: "We have played two games, while Santos is resting. We will arrive to the next game with a different kind of preparation.

"Over these years we have played many different opponents, and this game versus Santos it will be [the ultimate] experience.

"We will continue to play our game, and we want to play at the same level of Santos. We know they have great individuals, and we will try to reply as a team, by using our offensive creativity.

"I was at Santos as players from 1978 to 1982, I won titles with them, I was their manager briefly, but now I am at Kashiwa Reysol. I have affection toward Santos, and because of that I really want us to play a great game against them."

Meanwhile, defeated Monterrey coach Victor Vucetich had no complaints with his side's performances and applauded Kashiwa keeper Takanori Sugeno for his shootout heroics.

"It was a very good game, overall balanced, but we could not score a second goal," Vucetich told reporters.

"Penalty kicks are always a bit of a matter of luck, we prepared for this game to win it and [now that we've lost it] we'll keep working hard doing our best.

"However, our performance overall was very good, players did their best, and responded to my requests.

"We always practice penalty kicks when we train. Sugeno did very well, he is a very good player."

Sugeno added: "Honestly I was happy it went down to the penalty kick contest. It was a chance for me as a goalie to show what I have. It went well, I am very happy." - http://www.goal.com
