Defender Konno set to join Gamba
Japan international defender Yasuyuki Konno, who helped promoted FC Tokyo win the Emperor's Cup on Sunday, will rejoin former his J. League club Gamba Osaka, sources told Kyodo News.
The versatile 28-year-old, the only player to play the entirety of every game under national team coach Alberto Zaccheroni, has agreed to terms and Gamba is set to announce a multiyear deal in the coming days.
Konno, who scored in Tokyo's 4-2 win over Kyoto Sanga in the Emperor's Cup final, made his pro debut for Consadole Sapporo in 2001 before moving to Tokyo in 2004, when the Gasmen won their first major trophy in the Nabisco Cup.
He played a pivotal role in helping Tokyo last year win promotion back to the top flight following a surprise relegation in 2010.The Athens Olympian made his senior national team debut in 2005. He was part of the Japan squad that reached the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time on foreign turf at the 2010 finals in South Africa and won the Asian Cup last year in Qatar for a record fourth time.- http://www.japantimes.co.jp
