Gamba shows no mercy
Gamba manager Akira Nishino applauded his team for a nearly perfect game after they despatched of Yamagata in commanding form and kept the title race red hot with now only four games remaining. At the foot of the table, Fukuoka were relegated by their defeat at Shimizu and Yamagata, too, have now reached the brink and could be relegated as early as the next round of games in November 3rd. Urawa, on the other hand, bounced straight back out of the relegation zone by winning in Yokohama.
Gamba Osaka needed to recover quickly to maintain their title bid after last week's hammering by Nagoya and looked unstoppable on the day as they fought their way clinically to a huge 5-0 victory at Montedio Yamagata. For Yamagata, too, starting the day nine points adrift from the safety zone with only five games left to play, this was a must-win game against a team they had, in fact, still never lost to at home. It was always going to be hard, though, for the team with the fewest goals in J1 against the one with the most and the defeat extended their winless streak to five matches since their morale-boosting victory over Urawa at Saitama Stadium. -
