Gamba Show No Mercy as the Top Three All Win Away

Gamba manager Akira Nishino applauded his team for a nearly perfect game after they despatched of Yamagata in commanding form and kept the title race red hot with now only four games remaining. At the foot of the table, Fukuoka were relegated by their defeat at Shimizu and Yamagata, too, have now reached the brink and could be relegated as early as the next round of games in November 3rd. Urawa, on the other hand, bounced straight back out of the relegation zone by winning in Yokohama.

Gamba Osaka needed to recover quickly to maintain their title bid after last week's hammering by Nagoya and looked unstoppable on the day as they fought their way clinically to a huge 5-0 victory at Montedio Yamagata. For Yamagata, too, starting the day nine points adrift from the safety zone with only five games left to play, this was a must-win game against a team they had, in fact, still never lost to at home. It was always going to be hard, though, for the team with the fewest goals in J1 against the one with the most and the defeat extended their winless streak to five matches since their morale-boosting victory over Urawa at Saitama Stadium- by http://www.j-league.or.jp/.

Urawa Red Diamondsare a professional association football club playing in Japan's football league, J. League Division 1. One of Japan and Asia's best supported teams, the club has been able to boast the highest average crowds for thirteen of the J-League's twenty season history. In 2008 the team attracted an average gate of over 47,000 in all competitions, which included one game at the smaller Komaba stadium, the highest in both Japan and Asia as a whole. The club moved in 2001 to the newly built Saitama Stadium, and were able to accommodate a sharp increase in crowd numbers between 2003 and 2006; a period rich in silverware. Its hometown is the city of Saitama in Saitama Prefecture, but its name comes from the former city of Urawa, which is now a part of Saitama City.

Kashima Antlers are a Japanese professional association football club playing in the J. League Division 1. League title they became the first team in Japan to have won 10 domestic titles, and later the same year they completed their second league and cup double after claiming the Emperor's Cup title. In 2008 they became the first club to successfully defend their league title on two separate occasions.Antlers are also one of only five teams to have competed in Japan's top flight of football every year since its inception.

Gamba to build new stadium by 2014

OSAKA — Former Asian champion Gamba Osaka will move into a new soccer-only stadium with a capacity of at least 32,000 in time for the 2014 season.

Team president Kikuo Kanamori relayed the plan in person to Tetsuya Inoue, mayor of Suita, Osaka Prefecture, on Monday. Gamba are currently based at the Expo '70 Stadium in Suita, which holds just 21,000 and is a multipurpose arena.
The new stadium is expected to cost ¥15 billion, with Gamba's parent company Panasonic Corp. set to foot ¥8 billion. The rest will be covered by sponsors and donations from supporters.
Kanamori said he hopes the stadium will be able to hold 40,000 — the minimum size to host a World Cup match. Japan, which co-hosted the 2002 World Cup with South Korea, wants to host soccer's international showpiece on its own in the future.- by http://www.japantimes.co.jp

J. League News Update 10/24

It is all but certain that the 2011 J. League champion will come from the four-team breakaway group that has formed at the top of the table, but with a quarter of the season still to play, that is about as clear as the picture gets.

Gamba Osaka opened up a three-point gap over second- and third-place Yokohama F. Marinos and Kashiwa Reysol at the weekend, with defending champions Nagoya Grampus a point behind in fourth. There was a sense of ominous foreboding around the league when Grampus went top for the first time this season last month, but defeats to Vegalta Sendai and Reysol have dented their challenge while rivals have taken advantage.

Reysol and Marinos refuse to drop out of the title picture, and both continue to offer contrasting examples of how to mount a surprise championship challenge. Reysol's come-from-behind 2-1 win over Grampus on Saturday was typical of the Chiba side's tenacious attacking spirit, while Marinos' tight 1-0 triumph over Avispa Fukuoka was their 11th victory by a single-goal margin.

With all four teams still firmly in the championship mix, then, the destination of this year's title could well come down to who blinks first. With Marinos taking on Gamba, and Grampus visiting in-form Kashima Antlers this Sunday, something has to give.- b y http://www.japantimes.co.j

Wagner fires Kashiwa into J. League top spot

KASHIWA, Chiba Pref. — Jorge Wagner fired Kashiwa Reysol back to top of the table and increased Montedio Yamagata's relegation fears in the process with a 1-0 win in the J. League first division on Sunday.

The Brazilian midfielder secured the points with a twice-taken penalty in the first half to put Reysol two points ahead of Gamba Osaka, who were thrashed 4-1 by champions Nagoya Grampus on Saturday.

With five games of the season left, the title race remains poised for a dramatic climax. Kashiwa has 59 points, Gamba have 57, Grampus have 56 while Yokohama F. Marinos, held 1-1 by Sanfrecce Hiroshima on Saturday, are a further four points adrift.

"We thought this would be our last chance. Going top of the table was very much in our minds and we stayed clam and got the result," said Kashiwa captain Hidekazu Otani.

"The most important thing is to keep picking up three points and we got the job done today. We are top because of the results we have built up and all we have to do is keep it going."

Ryoichi Kurisawa went close to giving Kashiwa the lead midway through the first-half when he drew a smart save from Kenta Shimizu and the home side deservedly made the breakthrough 12 minutes before halftime.- by http://www.japantimes.co.jp
